Making Magic through Community:

Fairy Wands at the Library & Corsages at Westview Meadows

Last week I had and amazing time at the Jaquith Library making fairy wands with the youngest members of our community. My dear friend, Nicky Auerbach, leads a Summer Morning program at the Jaquith Library. Nicky welcomes the youngest members of our community each week with a warm smile, a greeting song, stories, snacks and a weekly craft. Nicky also happens to be my neighbor and friend, so I was thrilled when she asked me to come up with a flower craft for one week of her program. Using sticks, dried flowers, ribbons, bells, buttons and pipe cleaners our young friends created the most beautiful Fairy Wands. We made a total of sixteen beautifully unique wands and the children proceeded to run around the playground casting magic spells - how wonderful to have our very own flock of fairies right in the heart of Marshfield!

Watching our fairy friends flock together across the playground was a wonderful reminder of the value of community. The families at Story Time have a meeting place, a time to check in, be present and connect with each other. The magic that a group of people can create together is palpable and left me warm and fuzzy for days after the event. What else can we do to create connection? Who else can we welcome into our “playgroup”? This one meet-up has me feeling excited for the possibilities for more connection via flowers.

In August our Flowers for the People event will be at Westview Meadows in Montpelier. I will be teaching residents to make bracelet corsages that they can wear to their annual Friends and Family BBQ. Using flowers grown from The Magic Bean Farm we will create beautiful, wearable works of art that residents can show off to their family and friends. I am so grateful to Lauren, the Activities Coordinator at Westview, for working with me to provide residents with this workshop, which is made possible by Westview Meadows and Flowers for the People supporters.

As we continue to look ahead there are lots of other fun things in store for the Magic Bean Farm - including the Queer Arts Festival in August. More to come on that soon.
